 Life According To Lisa

My first artistic accolade was in the 6th grade when my art teacher told me a watercolor I did was "kind of like a Van Gooh."   (See I don't even know how to spell that!)   I excelled in Home Economics in Jr. High and High School....I have a darling apron to prove it.  Then after high school I started my working life in the banking business.  Everything from the computer department (HUGE computers 30 yrs. ago) to teller to new accounts to mortgage lending to branch manager.   During that time I also went to college to become an elementary school teacher.  (I had an "emphasis" in psychology which qualifies me to analyze anyone that I think might need it!)    Whew!   After that, I was ready for a change so at age 35, I became a cosmeotologist and started focusing on the skincare & makeup side of the beauty "industry".   I worked for several major cosmetics companies and became a corporate trainer during that time which involved a lot of traveling and eventually brought me to Atlanta.  After seven years as a trainer I decided it was time to stay put for a while so I took a job as Director of a Pre-school program.  Little did I know that this was perfect "training" for me because soon after, I met and married a wonderful man with triplets!   Well.....   this really sounds like I can't keep a job (ha ha) but I promise we'll have lot's of fun together!

Mamaw's Lessons

Yesterday I replied to a question concerning Dogwood, Blackberry and Redbud Winter. (I capitalize that because these "little winters" are like real “mini” seasons within Spring. Most southern gardeners or weather watchers know about these cold snaps each year. I haven't found many people outside the south that know about these weather blips.) Anyway... it's my Mamaw that you went to in order to find out answers about the weather. If she said it was going to rain and the weatherman said it...

The Lessons Of Spring

The grass always get green, the trees always bloom and the dirt always feels GREAT!   I love Springtime!  No matter how long winter is or how bleak life might seem at that minute, Spring reminds us that there is always a new day.    At the first sign of warmth I get the itch to start digging a hole.  I have to tell myself over and over, "We haven't had Dogwood, Redbud or Blackberry winter, yet.  You know you'll be sorry!"  Sometimes I listen to myself and sometimes and I don't.   I...

Life Lesson #8

Some things just can't be wished away. Well, I never imagined that I would need to take hormones. "Those are THINGS that other women take." I've always felt that I was strong and in control. Surely those qualities would cause me to be immune to the symptoms of aging. Unfortunately, sheer will, denial and wishing don't make hot flashes, forgetfulness and fatigue go away. After several years of trying to get my old self to come back and hoping that I would feel better some day, I...

One Of The MOST Important Life Lessons I've Learned:

When you are young and seemingly have the world by the tail, don't ever say, "I'll never do that" or "I'll never say that."   99.9% of the time you will have to eat your words.  It may be years later but it will catch up with you.   A lot of those "eating your words episodes" will happen when you are talking to your children.  Such as, "Because I said so",  "Your face is going to freeze like that",  "Don't you roll your eyes at me, young lady" and my mother's favorite threat, "There are going to...

Life Lesson #28

Not wearing sunscreen really will catch up with you.  All those early years of wearing nothing but baby oil (sometimes mixed with iodine) or just wearing nothing period, does cause wrinkles!  Using sunscreen as an adult doesn't make up for all those previous sunburns.  So, I am left with the evidence of abuse.  It's the lines around the mouth that bother me the most.  I have tried line fillers, some work better than others.  The best remedy is smiling as much as possible.  It stretches out the...

53 and counting........

I've just had my 53rd birthday. Here's two important things I've learned:   1.  Do not make fun of your mother when you are still young and you think that she is really old.  You will be sorry later on in life.  When you start wearing reading glasses you will find that having six pairs laying around in strategic places really is necessary.  When you get that wild look in your eyes and start hollering at everyone in the house for not putting their dirty socks in the laundry basket you WILL...
