Welcome to "Life According To Lisa."  I'm not sure how this is going to go but I sure am glad that you're here with me.  I may not be the most qualified person to be writing about "life" however, I am willing to give it a shot.  Here's a little bit about me and my background....

 J. Chad A graduate of Auburn University and Vanderbilt University, Chad has degrees in science, but his guilty pleasure is writing and, even more so, storytelling.  Enriched with Southern roots, Chad admits he's a huge fan of the Southern lifestyle and the characters which make it up.  With that fascination, he's translated his family's experiences into humorous tales in the true fashion of the South.  As a father of three and husband to an admitted "cosmetic junkie", Chad offers a man's perspective on beauty and serves up real laugh lines for us and our readers.

The future is not always what we plan it to be, so who would have ever guessed that I would be working for a magazine?   Well, here I am, the Beauty Director for Southern Beauty.  What a challenging and rewarding experience to be a part of something so exciting from the very start!   Most people ask me what I do in my spare time…well I love to run and believe it or not it wasn’t a hard thing to start. Let’s face it all that stress has to go somewhere so why not pound the pavement. During long distances I take Myrtle my trusted i pod with me. Currently my favorite artists are The Avett Brothers and The Gabe Dixon Band.   So here’s to the future and whatever it brings my way.   I am up for the challenge!

  Mila's Closet

Welcome to my closet!

I absolutely love fashion and everything that goes along with it, and I am here to share that passion with you. I own MODA Image Consulting, and because of that I have had the opportunity to be in and clean out many closets – and I can honestly say that I have seen it all. Bizarre fashion leftovers from the 80’s including numerous member only jackets, old suits that show us why we went gaga over shoulder pads, tie-dye shirts paying homage to the Woodstock era and some things I’d much rather forget. I really understand the connection between fashion and women in particular, and I know how frustrating it can be if we don’t know how to use it to our advantage. I also know that when we nail a look, or have an outfit on that we are sure must have been made just for us – it can inspire us and add a sense of confidence to everything that we do. Fashion has the mysterious ability to make us feel good even when our spirits are down – and can help our souls to feel reenergized even in the worst of times.

Our closets should be a stylish refuge where we can go in order to be motivated and encouraged – especially on those days when we feel like throwing on a pair of sweats and calling in sick to work. I will be here to give you tips and tricks, update you on great trends, and share stories that will inspire you to create your own memorable fashion statements!

   Ola!   I'm Jestina "The Beautinista"!

I'm a new blogger to the beauty bunch! I will be posting a bi-weekly blog to give you the 411 on beauty tips, trends,
techniques and hot new product launches. I guess you're saying to yourself, what makes her the authority on all things beauty? Well, just so you know, I've been in the beauty industry for over 15 years and I'm the Founder/Makeup Artist of Aware Cosmetics & Makeup Services.

Even though, beauty is a major part of my life, I have a million other interests as well. I'm a fulltime, non-traditional (40 year old) student obtaining a degree in Communications, I do Special Projects/Events for Birmingham City Council District 6 and I do Membership/Events for Vulcan Park & Museum. Yes, I'm a workaholic and just a little crazy, but I'm never bored and truly enjoy everything I do. During these economically rough times, I feel it's necessary for me to have a diverse work background. If needed I can "get in where I fit in" without missing a beat!

I'm also civic minded and serve on non-profit boards like YP Birmingham and Metropolitan Birmingham Services for the Homeless. It makes me feel great to be able to volunteer my time and talent for worthwhile causes.

So now that I've given you a little info about me, I hope we won't be strangers. Please feel free to post your comments, questions and concerns on the blog,

I can't wait to hear from you. Check me out next week!

Stay Beautilicious!

   The WORD On The Street

   (Read Now!)

Dianah here- veteran prosecutor turned stay at home mommy. I know, there is something inherently weird sounding in that, but it's true. Kind of like superhero, Elastigirl becoming Helen Parr and being a stay at home mommy in the Incredibles. It happens. I prosecuted for 10 years in the District Attorney's office after law school and loved it. During the last half of those 10 years I met and married my Sunday school sweetheart. I also found out I was pregnant - right after a guilty verdict on an attempted murder case. Never a dull moment at the DA's office... So after baby, I decided to let someone else handle the criminals for a while and my colleagues seem to be doing fine- no huge increase in general mayhem since I left. As for me, I have found that surprisingly a two year old and criminals have more similarities than you might think. But I digress... What I want to say is that all this life and living took place against a backdrop of myriad spiritual discoveries. Slowly (mostly because of me) but surely, God has revealed so much of who He is and now He has given me the opportunity of this forum to learn even more by sharing, learning and praying with you as we go about living by the WORD on the street.

They say you can tell a Southerner by how they remember every experience based on what food they had.

“How was your trip?”  “Oh, it was wonderful. We had the best peach cobbler…”

History has wired Southerners to think this way. We relate our experiences to what was served, what was prepared… Celebrations center around dishes steeped in tradition and memories of Great Granny preparing her special rolls or pie.

I spent my childhood hearing stories from my great grandmother about a lifetime of sharecropping. They lived in little shack houses provided by land owners where, as a child, my grandmother planted and raised cotton in exchange for lodging and a few monthly staples such as a 25-pound sack of flour and dried beans. Still, their childhood was filled with memories of wonderful food, thanks to the tradition of great Southern cooks having been firmly embedded in the family root system generations earlier when they were among the first to settle the Tennessee Valley.

Generations later, I’m a busy mom and wife working from home with my laptop on the kitchen counter and my iPhone to my ear as I try to build a business which I had originally begun purely as a hobby. My days are spent responding to hundreds of emails, taking photographs of food, writing columns, shipping cookbooks, managing a website with over 100,000+ page views per day, and trying to wrangle in time to talk on the phone to food industry execs without my daughter screaming “Mama, Mama!” in the background.

I wake up singing and hit the ground running. My day seems to start without me and I spend the rest of it trying to catch up with my own life and loving every stinking moment of it. I have two great kids who alternate between making me laugh and want to pull my hair out, but we mostly laugh - together.

Join me as I branch out from food blogging. I’ll still bring you recipes but I’ll also share the insanity of my wonderfully crazy life. I’ll just bet you can relate!

Gratefully,

Christy
